Here’s how Vanna, a young girl in Cambodia, found hope in the midst of horror:

The day was like many others for Vanna. After school, she and her brother ventured out to hunt for snails on their rice farm, something they did almost every day to supplement their family’s meals.

A man from the village appeared and suggested to Vanna that she and her brother might find more snails if they hunted separately. So her brother set off to a different spot.

But before he was even out of sight, the man attacked Vanna and began to rape her. Seeing the struggle, Vanna’s brother ran to the rescue, jumping on the man to try to pull him off. But the man pulled a knife and slashed his throat.

After the man finished with her, he stabbed Vanna repeatedly and left her for dead. She crawled and staggered home. Her family rushed her to the hospital and at this point Vanna was referred to Hagar.

The road to recovery for Vanna has been hard, but today she is a strong girl who is doing well in school. She can confidently look people in the eye. And she is dreaming about her future!

Right now, we have the opportunity to help more women and children just like Vanna navigate the path to recovery through new initiatives like job-creating programs in Afghanistan and Vietnam, as well as by expanding our mentoring program for survivors of abuse.
